Radio Essex is the only localised pirate station in Great Britain and concentrates on the county of Essex, although it can be received in the surrounding districts. The station is based on a fort in the Thames Estuary and was made operational by a Southend businessman, Mr. Roy Bates, and his wife, Joan. The team of d.j.'s play easy listening music during the day, with pop and hit tunes throughout the night. Listeners' requests are also answered and news bulletins provided throughout the 24 hours. Radio Essex--"The Voice of Essex'' as it calls itself--has its headquarters at 33, Avenue Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, where all inquiries are handled.

DICK PALMER (Senior d.j.)
Live-wire man of the air, Dick trained to become an engineer after leaving school and actually qualified in the profession before deciding to switch to commercial radio. Blond-haired--and sporting a Manfred Mann beard--he is twenty-tour years old and lives in Kent when away from 222. He is "Fort Captain" and responsible for the running of the station, Dick likes most modern music and on shore enjoys driving and tinkering with cars.
GUY HAMILTON
Tall and good-looking, Guy is another Essex lad who has found a place in the hearts of Essex radio fans through his bright shows. He is eighteen years old and one of the newer members of the 222 team. Likes most modern music--as long as it's good--and enjoys spending his off-duty time taking pictures with his camera
VINCE ALLEN
The bad weather which hits Radio Essex from time to time doesn't bother Vince too much because he has been a paratrooper and knows what it means to battle the elements. Tall, bland-haired Vince is an executive of the station and has built himself up quite a following over the air waves. He is twenty-nine years old and is another member of the team who comes from Essex. His tastes in music are wide and when he has time off he likes studying railway history. As if he didn't see enough of the water, he is also passionately interested in coastal sailing barges.
DAVID SINCLAIR
If deejaying wasn't firmly in his blood now, David might well turn to politics for he has both a keen knowledge of, and interest in, the working of Parliament (even if they ore trying to put him and his fellow disc spinners off the air!). He is twenty-four years old and makes his home in Kent. As for as music is concerned he is particularly keen on big bands, but appreciates all good pop tunes. When on dry land he likes motoring as a way of relaxing.
ROGER SCOTT
A life-long interest in short-wave radio has enabled Roger to quickly fit into the routine of being a sea-bound d.j. Hailing from North London, he runs a swinging show on 222 with special appeal to younger listeners. He is a keen chess player and says he likes most kinds of modern music. His home is in North London.
MARK WEST
Mark at eighteen years old is one of the youngest d.j.'s on the air waves of Britain. Broadcasting to his home county--he lives in Hadleigh, Essex--means he has a special knowledge of the area and what local fans like. He is a very accomplished guitar player and would sing and play on the fort if the other lads let him! Apart from pop music, he enjoys photography and tape recording.
